## How do layering stamps work?

**Each layer is a separate stamp that prints one part of the image, and you stamp them in order, usually from the lightest ink to the darkest.** The first layer is a solid silhouette; later layers add petals, shading and fine detail.

Lining up each layer by eye takes practice. A stamp positioner such as the [MISTI](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/misti-stamping-tool/) or the [Tim Holtz Stamp Platform](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/tim-holtz-stamp-platform/) holds the card still and lets you place each layer, then re-stamp it if it prints patchy.


## Which inks work best?

**Dye inks in a light-to-dark family give the smoothest layered look, because each layer shows through the next.** Pick three or four shades of one color for the peony and two or three greens for the leaves.
