- Made in (Pilot Metropolitan Fountain Pen): Japan. Per Milligram's listing (made in Japan). Pilot's Japanese catalog page for the Cocoon (read in full on October 20, 2026) doesn't state a country. eBay and Rokomari listings cited earlier blocked our access on that date, so we dropped them. Source: https://milligram.com/products/pilot-pen-metropolitan-fountain-pen
- Made in (Platinum Preppy Fountain Pen (02 EF / 03 F / 05 M)): Japan. Per retailer listings: Hunter Paper Co says made in Japan and Unsharpen gives Japan as the country of origin (both read on October 20, 2026). Platinum's Japanese product pages don't state it. Source: https://hunterpaperco.com/products/platinum-preppy-fountain-pen-fine-nib
- Made in (Pilot Kakuno Fountain Pen): Japan. Unsharpen gives Japan as the country of origin, and Mynavi News calls the Kakuno a domestic (kokusan) fountain pen. Pilot's Japanese catalog page for FKA-1SR (read in full on October 20, 2026) doesn't state a country. LarryPost, cited earlier, no longer loads. Source: https://unsharpen.com/pen/pilot-kakuno/
- Made in (LAMY safari Fountain Pen (LH left-hand nib)): Germany. LAMY's own product listing (India storefront) gives Germany as the country of origin and names C. Josef Lamy GmbH, Heidelberg, as the manufacturer, and also says made in Germany. LAMY's German page names no country. Source: https://www.lamy.com/en-in/p/lamy-safari-fountain-pen
- Made in (TWSBI ECO Fountain Pen): Taiwan. Goldspot's ECO spec sheet says "Made in Taiwan", and Pen Chalet shows "ECO-T Taiwan" engraved on the ECO-T's cap band. TWSBI's own product pages don't print a country of manufacture, and its Taiwanese site, twsbi.com.tw, didn't load for us on October 20, 2026. JetPens says TWSBI nibs are made in Germany. - Made in (Kaweco Classic Sport Fountain Pen): Germany. Kaweco's German product page labels the Classic Sport "100% Made in Germany" and says all nibs and the pen itself are made in Germany; its series page says Classic Sport pens are produced and assembled in Germany. Cornelissen says hand assembled in Germany, and Milligram says designed and made in Germany. Source: https://www.kaweco-pen.com/en/Series/CLASSIC-SPORT/

## Key takeaways

- Four of the six pens sit in our $$$ band ($20–75 per pen); the Platinum Preppy and Pilot Kakuno are $$ ($5–20).
- The TWSBI ECO holds about 1.76 ml of ink by Goulet Pens' measurement, more than four times the 0.4 ml of Pilot's CON-40 converter.
- Capped lengths run from 105 mm (Kaweco Classic Sport) to 139.5 mm (LAMY safari); the Pilot Kakuno is the lightest at 11.0 g.
- Japanese nibs run finer: The Journal Shop says a Pilot Fine writes about like a Western Extra Fine, and Cult Pens gives the Preppy 03 Fine as a 0.3 mm line.
- LAMY sells the safari with a left-hand (LH) nib, which The Journal Shop describes as ground to write more reliably when you push the pen.

## What is the best fountain pen for beginners?

**On published specs, the Pilot Metropolitan is the best fountain pen for most beginners, while the best pick for a tiny budget, a child, a left-hander, a big ink supply or a pocket is a different pen.** Picks are based on published specs and maker claims; we haven't tested them yet.

- **Best overall:** [Pilot Metropolitan](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pilot-metropolitan/). A 26.0 g brass body, a fine Japanese steel nib, and a converter in the box, so you can use cartridges or bottled ink from day one.
- **Cheapest first pen:** [Platinum Preppy](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/platinum-preppy/). It shares our $$ band ($5–20 per pen) with the Kakuno but costs less, and has a Slip & Seal cap that Platinum says keeps a cartridge from drying out for 1 year.
- **Best for kids:** [Pilot Kakuno](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pilot-kakuno/). At 11.0 g it is the lightest here, and Pilot designed it for children, with a triangular grip and a smiley-face nib that shows which way is up.
- **Best for left-handers:** [LAMY safari](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/lamy-safari/) with the LH nib. LAMY grinds this nib for left-handed writers, and the nib pushes off by hand if you later want a different size.
- **Best piston filler and ink capacity:** [TWSBI ECO](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/twsbi-eco/). Its built-in piston holds about 1.76 ml by Goulet Pens' measurement, more than four times a Pilot CON-40 converter.
- **Most pocketable:** Kaweco Classic Sport. Kaweco's German site gives it as 10.5 cm (4.1 in) closed and 13 cm (5.1 in) with the cap posted. Our [Kaweco Sport guide](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/kaweco-sport/) covers its cartridges, clip and nibs.

## How do the six beginner fountain pens compare?

**The Metropolitan, Preppy, safari and ECO are all about 138–140 mm capped; the Kakuno is shorter and lightest, and the Kaweco Sport is the only pocket-size pen.**

| | Metropolitan | Preppy | Kakuno | safari | TWSBI ECO | Kaweco Sport |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Body | Brass | Clear polycarbonate | Resin, hexagonal | ASA plastic | Plastic, clear options | Plastic, octagonal cap |
| Steel nibs | F, M, 1.0 stub | 02 EF, 03 F, 05 M | EF, F, M | EF, F, M, B, LH, italics | EF, F, M, B, 1.1 stub | EF, F, M, B, BB |
| Filling | Pilot cartridge or converter (included) | Platinum cartridge or converter | Pilot cartridge or converter | T10 cartridge or Z28 converter | Piston, bottle only | Short international cartridge or mini converter |
| Capped | 138 mm | 138 mm | 130.9 mm | 139.5 mm | 138.8 mm | 105 mm |
| Weight | 26.0 g | 13 g | 11.0 g | 17.0 g | 21 g | 10.7 g |
| Made in | Japan | Japan | Japan | Germany | Taiwan | Germany |
| Price band | $$$ | $$ | $$ | $$$ | $$$ | $$$ |

Figures come from each pen's guide. Kaweco Sport figures are from Kaweco's German site (length, 10.7 g and nibs); Missing Pen lists 11.0 g.

## Which nib size should a beginner choose?

**Choose Fine for most first pens, Extra Fine for small handwriting or cheap paper, and Medium only if you like a bold, wet line on good paper.** A finer nib puts down less ink, which usually means less bleed and feathering on thin paper.

Nib names aren't standard. Japanese makers such as Pilot and Platinum run finer: The Journal Shop says a Pilot Fine writes about like a Western Extra Fine, and Cult Pens gives the Preppy 03 Fine as a 0.3 mm line. LAMY and Kaweco use German sizing, so their Fine is broader.

| If you want… | Japanese pens (Pilot, Platinum) | German pens (LAMY, Kaweco) |
|---|---|---|
| A very fine line | F (or Preppy 02 EF) | EF |
| An everyday line | F or M | F |
| A bold line | M or 1.0 stub | M or B |

## Cartridge, converter or piston: which is easiest?

**Cartridges are easiest: you push one in and write, with no bottle and no mess.** A converter lets the same pen fill from a bottle, and a piston filler like the TWSBI ECO uses only bottled ink.

| Method | How it works | Pens here | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cartridge | Sealed ink tube pushed onto the nib unit | All but the ECO | Simple; fewer colors; each brand has its own fit |
| Converter | Refillable tube that replaces the cartridge | Metropolitan (in box), Preppy, Kakuno, safari, Sport | Any bottled ink; holds less than a cartridge on some pens |
| Piston | The barrel itself is the ink tank | TWSBI ECO | About 1.76 ml; bottle needed every time |

Cartridges don't cross brands. The Pilot pens share Pilot cartridges and converters, the safari needs LAMY T10s, and the Preppy needs Platinum's. The Kaweco Sport takes short standard international cartridges; full-length ones don't fit.

## How much does a beginner fountain pen cost in the US?

**Expect $5–20 for a Platinum Preppy or a Pilot Kakuno, with the Preppy the cheaper of the two, and $20–75 for the Metropolitan, safari, TWSBI ECO and Kaweco Sport at US pen shops.** Those are bands from the US listings we checked in October 2026 (Goulet Pens and others), not exact prices.

By our site bands, the Preppy and Kakuno are $$ ($5–20 per pen) and the other four are $$$ ($20–75). The ECO also needs a bottle of ink, and converters for the Preppy, Kakuno and safari are sold separately.

## What do other reviewers recommend?

**Other US reviewers mostly agree on the same short list, though they rank it differently.**

- **JetPens'** [2026 best pens roundup](https://www.jetpens.com/blog/The-47-Best-Pens-for-2026-Gel-Ballpoint-Rollerball-and-Fountain-Pens/pt/974) names the Pilot Metropolitan its top beginner fountain pen, and notes that the Pilot Kakuno uses the same swappable nib.
- **The Gentleman Stationer's** [2026 "Best Pen" list](https://www.gentlemanstationer.com/best-pens-2026) puts the TWSBI ECO first for beginners willing to use bottled ink, with the LAMY safari and Pilot Kakuno also listed.
- **The Pen Addict** ran a [2014 guest post](https://www.penaddict.com/blog/2014/8/26/guest-post-i-think-i-want-to-try-out-this-whole-fountain-pen-thing) comparing beginner pens, including the Metropolitan and the Kaweco Classic Sport.

We couldn't find a current Wirecutter fountain pen pick to cite.

## Where are these fountain pens made?

**Three are made in Japan (Metropolitan, Preppy, Kakuno), two in Germany (safari, Kaweco Sport) and one in Taiwan (TWSBI ECO).** LAMY and Kaweco state German manufacture themselves (Kaweco labels the Classic Sport "100% Made in Germany"); the rest come from retailer listings, as each guide explains.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a good first fountain pen?

The Pilot Metropolitan is the most common recommendation: JetPens names it its top beginner fountain pen, and it comes with a converter and a black Pilot cartridge. For the lowest price, start with a Platinum Preppy.

### What is the cheapest decent fountain pen for a beginner?

The Platinum Preppy, the cheapest pen here and one of only two in our $$ band ($5–20 per pen), with the Pilot Kakuno. It has a steel nib in 02 Extra Fine, 03 Fine or 05 Medium and a Slip & Seal cap that Platinum says stops a cartridge drying out for a year.

### What fountain pen is best for a child?

The Pilot Kakuno, which Pilot designed for children and first-time users. It weighs 11.0 g by Goulet Pens' measurement, has a triangular grip and a hexagonal body that doesn't roll, and its nib has a smiley face that shows which way is up.

### What fountain pen is best for left-handed writers?

A LAMY safari with LAMY's LH nib is the usual choice. The Journal Shop describes the LH as a medium nib ground at a slightly steeper, rounder angle so it writes more reliably when pushed across the page. A fine Japanese nib, which lays down less ink, is another option.

### Should a beginner get a fine or medium nib?

Fine suits most beginners, especially on everyday paper. Remember that a Japanese Fine, as on Pilot and Platinum pens, writes narrower than a German Fine from LAMY or Kaweco.

### Do beginner fountain pens use cartridges?

Five of the six do, but each takes its own type: Pilot, Platinum and LAMY T10 cartridges are proprietary, and the Kaweco Sport takes short standard international cartridges. The TWSBI ECO takes no cartridges and fills only from a bottle.

### What is the most pocketable beginner fountain pen?

The Kaweco Classic Sport. Kaweco's German site gives it as 10.5 cm (4.1 in) closed and 13 cm (5.1 in) with the cap posted, so it becomes a full-size pen when you write.
