- Made in (TWSBI Diamond 580 Fountain Pen (Clear)): Taiwan. LarryPOST lists "Origin: Taiwan". TWSBI's own site says the brand was started by TaShin Precision, a Taiwanese maker with 50-plus years as an OEM manufacturer, but its product pages don't print a country of manufacture. JetPens says TWSBI's nibs themselves are made in Germany. TWSBI's Taiwanese site, twsbi.com.tw, didn't load for us on October 20, 2026. Source: https://www.larrypost.com.au/products/twsbi-diamond-580rbt-fountain-pen-red-blue-transparent
- Made in (TWSBI ECO Fountain Pen): Taiwan. Goldspot's ECO spec sheet says "Made in Taiwan", and Pen Chalet shows "ECO-T Taiwan" engraved on the ECO-T's cap band. TWSBI's own product pages don't print a country of manufacture, and its Taiwanese site, twsbi.com.tw, didn't load for us on October 20, 2026. JetPens says TWSBI nibs are made in Germany. - Made in (Pilot Custom 74 Fountain Pen (black, gold trim)): Japan. Per retailer listings: Makkura gives Japan as the origin, and eBay item specifics from sellers in Japan list Japan as the country of origin. Pilot's Japanese web catalog and press release don't state it; the 2022 anniversary edition's cap ring is engraved JAPAN. - Made in (Platinum #3776 Century Fountain Pen (Chartres Blue, gold trim)): Japan. Unsharpen's review says the band reads "Platinum #3776 Century Made in Japan". Platinum's own English pages don't state it in the sources we found. Source: https://unsharpen.com/pen/platinum-3776-century-fountain-pen/
- Made in (Pelikan Classic M200 Fountain Pen (Black, gold-plated trim)): Germany. Pelikan's German product page for the Classic 200 Schwarz says "Gefertigt und montiert in Deutschland" (made and assembled in Germany) and "Qualität, made in Germany". Source: https://www.pelikan-passion.com/de/writing/elegance/classic/classic-200-schwarz.html
- Made in (LAMY AL-star Fountain Pen (graphite)): Germany. LAMY's own AL-star listings (India storefront) give Germany as the country of origin and name C. Josef Lamy GmbH, Heidelberg, as the manufacturer; LAMY's German page names no country. One Swiss retailer, Galaxus, has listed China and Germany for one color (its page now blocks automated reading); we follow LAMY's own figure. - Made in (Pilot Metropolitan Fountain Pen): Japan. Per Milligram's listing (made in Japan). Pilot's Japanese catalog page for the Cocoon (read in full on October 20, 2026) doesn't state a country. eBay and Rokomari listings cited earlier blocked our access on that date, so we dropped them. Source: https://milligram.com/products/pilot-pen-metropolitan-fountain-pen
- Made in (Pilot Prera Fountain Pen (Clear, Light Blue)): Japan. Unsharpen gives Japan as the country of origin. Pilot's Japanese catalog pages for the Prera (read in full on October 20, 2026) don't state a country. The Hunter Paper Co. listing cited earlier no longer shows the pen. Source: https://unsharpen.com/pen/pilot-prera-fountain-pen/
- Made in (Kaweco Classic Sport Fountain Pen): Germany. Kaweco's German product page labels the Classic Sport "100% Made in Germany" and says all nibs and the pen itself are made in Germany; its series page says Classic Sport pens are produced and assembled in Germany. ## Key takeaways

- Six of the nine pens compared sit in our $$$ band ($20–75 per pen); the Pilot Custom 74, Platinum #3776 Century and Pelikan M200 are $$$$ (over $75).
- The TWSBI Diamond 580 holds the most ink here, a 1.98 ml maximum by Goulet Pens' figure, against about 1.2 ml in the Pelikan M200's piston.
- Gold nibs start in the $$$$ band: the Custom 74 has a 14k No. 5 nib, and US listings we checked in October 2026 put it above US$100.
- Capped lengths run from 105 mm (Kaweco Classic Sport) to 143 mm (Pilot Custom 74); the Pelikan M200 is the lightest full-size pen at 13.5 g.
- Four are made in Japan, three in Germany and two in Taiwan, by each pen's guide; Pelikan, LAMY and Kaweco state German manufacture themselves.

## What is the best fountain pen under $100?

**On published specs, the TWSBI Diamond 580 is the best fountain pen under US$100 for most people, with different picks for a cheaper piston filler, a gold nib, an everyday steel nib, a pocket pen and a demonstrator.** Under our one-scale price bands these are $$$ pens ($20–75 per pen) plus the low end of $$$$ (over $75). Picks are based on published specs and maker claims; we haven't tested them yet.

- **Best overall and best piston filler:** [TWSBI Diamond 580](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/twsbi-diamond-580/). A clear faceted piston filler that holds a 1.98 ml maximum by Goulet Pens' figure, with steel nib units in EF to a 1.1 mm stub that unscrew for swapping.
- **Cheaper piston filler:** [TWSBI ECO](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/twsbi-eco/). The same bottle-only filling at 1.76 ml per Goulet, in a lighter 21 g body for less money.
- **Best gold nib on a budget:** [Pilot Custom 74](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pilot-custom-74/). A 14k gold No. 5 nib and the 1.23 ml CON-70 converter; it is a $$$$ pen, and US listings we checked put it above US$100.
- **Best everyday steel nib:** [LAMY AL-star](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/lamy-al-star/). An aluminium body with five push-on steel nibs, including LAMY's LH for left-handers, at €29.50 (about US$33) in LAMY's German shop.
- **Best pocket pen:** [Kaweco Classic Sport](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/kaweco-sport/). 10.5 cm (4.1 in) closed and 13 cm (5.1 in) posted per Kaweco, with short international cartridges.
- **Best demonstrator:** [Pilot Prera](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pilot-prera/). A clear 120.4 mm body that shows the ink, 15.4 g per Pilot, with a CON-40 converter in the box in Japan.
- **German piston step-up:** Pelikan Classic M200. 13.5 g, about 1.2 ml of ink by Pelikan's Perch, and made and assembled in Germany, per Pelikan.

## How do these fountain pens compare?

**Most are 138–143 mm capped; the M200 and Prera are shorter, and the Kaweco Sport is the only pocket pen.** Figures come from each pen's guide.

| | Diamond 580 | ECO | Custom 74 | #3776 Century | M200 | AL-star | Metropolitan | Prera | Kaweco Sport |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nib | Steel | Steel | 14k gold | 14k gold | Gold-plated steel | Steel | Steel | Steel | Gold-plated steel |
| Filling | Piston | Piston | Cartridge, CON-70 | Cartridge, converter | Piston | T10, Z28 | Cartridge, converter | Cartridge, CON-40 | Short int'l cartridge |
| Capped | 142 mm | 138.8 mm | 143 mm | 139.5 mm | 125 mm | 140 mm | 138 mm | 120.4 mm | 105 mm |
| Weight | 28.0 g | 21 g | 17.4 g | 20.5 g | 13.5 g | 24 g | 26.0 g | 15.4 g | 10.7 g |
| Made in | Taiwan | Taiwan | Japan | Japan | Germany | Germany | Japan | Japan | Germany |
| Band | $$$ | $$$ | $$$$ | $$$$ | $$$$ | $$$ | $$$ | $$$ | $$$ |

Weights are maker figures where published (Pilot, Platinum, Pelikan, LAMY, Kaweco) and Goulet Pens' otherwise.

## Can you get a gold nib for under US$100?

**Rarely, in the US, in October 2026.** The cheapest gold-nib pens in our guides, the Pilot Custom 74 and the Platinum #3776 Century, both sit in our $$$$ band, and the US listings we checked put the Custom 74 above US$100.

Japanese list prices have risen too. Pilot's web catalog lists the black Custom 74 at ¥38,500 (about US$244) from July 1, 2026, and Platinum lists the gold-trim #3776 Century at ¥44,000 (about US$278).

If gold matters most, the #3776 Century's Slip & Seal cap is the reason to pick it over the Custom 74: Platinum says it lets the pen sit unused for about 2 years. The [Custom 74](https://stationerytimes.com/guides/pilot-custom-74/) holds more ink with its CON-70.

## Piston filler or cartridges: which holds more ink?

**A piston filler holds more: the Diamond 580 takes up to 1.98 ml, about five times a Pilot CON-40 converter.** Cartridge pens are easier to keep inked on the move.

| Pen | Filling | Ink capacity |
|---|---|---|
| TWSBI Diamond 580 | Piston, bottle only | 1.98 ml max (Goulet) |
| TWSBI ECO | Piston, bottle only | 1.76 ml max (Goulet) |
| Pelikan M200 | Piston, bottle only | About 1.2 ml (Pelikan's Perch) |
| Pilot Custom 74 | Cartridge or CON-70 | 1.03 ml cartridge, 1.23 ml CON-70 (Goulet) |
| LAMY AL-star | T10 cartridge or Z28 | 1.56 ml cartridge, 1.08 ml Z28 (Goulet) |
| Pilot Prera | Cartridge or CON-40 | About 0.4 ml CON-40 (Unsharpen) |

The TWSBI and Pelikan pens need a bottle every time. The Kaweco Sport takes only short international cartridges or a mini converter, so it holds the least.

## What do other reviewers recommend?

**US and UK reviewers land on the same short list.**

- **The Gentleman Stationer's** [2026 list](https://www.gentlemanstationer.com/best-pens-2026) says the TWSBI 580 still rules its under-US$100 category, with the LAMY Studio second. It puts the Custom 74 in its over-US$100 gold-nib section and says gold nibs now usually cost more than that.
- **The Journal Shop's** [guide to pens under £100 (about US$132)](https://www.thejournalshop.com/blogs/guides/best-fountain-pens-under-100) names the Custom 74 its best first gold nib, the #3776 Century as an alternative, the Kaweco AL Sport for pockets and the TWSBI 580AL for piston filling. Its prices are in pounds for UK buyers.

We couldn't find a current Wirecutter or Pen Addict list for this budget.

## Where are these fountain pens made?

**Japan, Germany and Taiwan.** The Pilot and Platinum pens are made in Japan; Pelikan, LAMY and Kaweco state German manufacture themselves; and retailers list Taiwan for both TWSBI pens, whose nibs JetPens says are made in Germany.

Each guide's facts box explains its source, including where a maker's own page names no country.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the TWSBI Diamond 580 worth it over the TWSBI ECO?

If you want the larger tank and screw-out nib units, yes. Goulet Pens lists the 580 at 1.98 ml against 1.76 ml for the ECO, and TWSBI sells 580 nib units in five widths; the ECO is lighter at 21 g and costs less.

### What is the cheapest gold-nib fountain pen?

Among the pens we cover, the Pilot Custom 74 and Platinum #3776 Century, both with 14k nibs and both in our $$$$ band (over $75). US listings we checked in October 2026 put the Custom 74 above US$100, so a gold nib usually stretches this budget.

### Which fountain pen under $100 holds the most ink?

The TWSBI Diamond 580, with a maximum of 1.98 ml by Goulet Pens' figure. Its piston fills from a bottle only, as do the TWSBI ECO (1.76 ml) and Pelikan M200 (about 1.2 ml).

### What is a good everyday fountain pen for work?

The LAMY AL-star suits daily carry: an anodized aluminium body, a polished steel nib in EF, F, M, B or a left-hand LH grind, and LAMY T10 cartridges that are easy to find. LAMY's German shop lists it at €29.50 (about US$33).

### What is the best pocket fountain pen?

The Kaweco Classic Sport. Kaweco's German site describes it as 10.5 cm (4.1 in) closed and 13 cm (5.1 in) with the cap posted, so it writes like a full-size pen; the clip is sold separately.

### What is a demonstrator fountain pen?

A pen with a clear body, so you can see the ink and the filling parts. The Pilot Prera and TWSBI Diamond 580 come in clear versions; the TWSBI ECO has a clear barrel with a solid-color cap.

### Is the Pelikan M200 worth stretching the budget for?

If you want a German piston filler, it is the smallest step into Pelikan: 12.5 cm capped and 13.5 g per Pelikan, with a gold-plated steel nib whose unit unscrews. It sits in our $$$$ band, over $75.
