What is the LAMY 2000?
The LAMY 2000 is LAMY’s piston-filling fountain pen with a 14k gold nib, designed by Gerd A. Müller and launched in 1966. LAMY’s German site says Dr. Manfred Lamy developed it with Müller, a Braun product designer from 1955 to 1960, on Bauhaus principles of form and function.
It is the most expensive pen we cover in LAMY’s range, and the step up many owners of the LAMY safari consider next. Unlike the safari, it fills from a bottle with a built-in piston and has a gold nib.

What is Makrolon, and why does the LAMY 2000 look brushed?
Makrolon is a polycarbonate, and LAMY’s version is reinforced with fiberglass and given a fine brushed grain. LAMY’s listing pairs it with a stainless steel section and clip in a satin finish, so the pen has a matte look all over.
The body and the steel section meet almost flush, and the ink window is a ring of small slots near the front of the barrel. LAMY’s listing says the window lets you check the ink level. The clip is a solid steel spring clip.
How does the LAMY 2000 fill?
You twist the knob at the end of the barrel to move a piston, which draws ink from a bottle straight into the barrel. Retailers stress that it takes no cartridges or converter, and LAMY recommends its T 51, T 52 and T 53 bottled inks.
At about 1.35 ml, it holds less than the TWSBI ECO (1.76 ml, per Goulet Pens), but well over the 0.8 ml Unsharpen lists for the LAMY Z28 converter used in the safari.
Which LAMY 2000 nib should you choose?
Choose EF or F for small handwriting, and M or B for a wetter line on good paper. LAMY’s German sizing runs broader than Japanese sizes, so an F here writes closer to a Japanese M.
- EF and F: the safest choice for planners and thin paper.
- M and B: smoother and wetter; best on paper such as a Leuchtturm1917 Medium A5.
- BB and obliques (OM, OB, OBB): offered in LAMY’s German shop; less common at US shops.
The nib is partly hooded, so only the tip shows.
How does the LAMY 2000 compare to the LAMY safari and TWSBI ECO?
The LAMY 2000 is the only one of the three with a gold nib, and costs several times as much.
| LAMY 2000 | LAMY safari | TWSBI ECO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Filling | Piston | T10 cartridge or Z28 converter | Piston |

Where is the LAMY 2000 made?
LAMY’s own listing gives Germany as the country of origin, with C. Josef Lamy GmbH in Heidelberg as the manufacturer. LAMY’s German site describes LAMY as a Heidelberg company and one of Germany’s leading pen makers. LAMY has been part of Mitsubishi Pencil since 2024, and the stated origin hasn’t changed in the sources we found.
How much does a LAMY 2000 cost?
The LAMY 2000 is in our $$$$ price band, over $75 per pen. That is from the US listings we checked in October 2026, such as Goulet Pens; LAMY’s German shop lists it at €280 (about US$314). You also need a bottle of ink, since it takes no cartridges.
