What is the uni Jetstream 4&1?

The Jetstream 4&1 is a multi pen from Mitsubishi Pencil with four Jetstream ballpoint colors and a 0.5 mm mechanical pencil in one body. The model is MSXE5-1000, and the inks are black, red, blue and green. Mitsubishi Pencil’s 2011 press release says the 4&1 first came out in November 2008, and The Pen Addict was reviewing a 0.7 mm “Jetstream 4+1” by September 2010.

It’s a long-running enthusiast favorite: Gentleman Stationer says he uses one daily and owns five or six, and it’s our multi-pen pick in best pocket pens. Its ink is the same low-viscosity Jetstream ink as the single uni-ball Jetstream RT.

Mitsubishi Pencil’s Japanese product page publishes the sizes, pencil lead, codes and price; the size, weight and materials come from retailers. Mitsubishi Pencil renewed the lineup with new standard body colors from December 1, 2025; Japanese body colors aren’t always sold in the US, so check the listing.

How do you switch colors and use the pencil?

Each ink color has its own slider at the top; the pencil comes out when you press the clip. The Pen Addict explains that pushing the clip down brings out the 0.5 mm pencil, and pressing it again advances the lead.

The same reviewer found the clip the weakest part of the pen in a 2021 review: it rattles a little, and its spring tension is a compromise between clipping and clicking.

Four ink sliders sit around the top; the clip is the pencil button.

What refills does the Jetstream 4&1 use?

It takes Mitsubishi Pencil’s SXR-80 Jetstream refill, in the same ball size as the pen. The codes are SXR-80-38 (0.38 mm), SXR-80-05 (0.5 mm) and SXR-80-07 (0.7 mm), each sold in black, red, blue and green. Mitsubishi Pencil lists them at ¥110 (about US$0.70) each in Japan.

Gentleman Stationer notes that SXR-80 refills also fit the Jetstream 3&1. Stationery World lists one SXR-80-05 refill at 0.7 g, so a spare or two weighs next to nothing in a pen case.

Which Jetstream 4&1 size should you choose?

Pick 0.5 mm for most handwriting, 0.38 mm for planners and small notes, and 0.7 mm for a smoother, darker line. A finer ball lays down less ink, so it also smears less on thin paper.

uni-ball markets Jetstream ink as quick-drying, which is why the single Jetstream is our ballpoint pick in best pens for left-handed writers. We haven’t timed the 4&1 refills ourselves.

What is the Jetstream 4&1 Lite touch?

It’s a 4&1 with Mitsubishi Pencil’s lighter-writing Lite touch ink, model MSXE5-LS-05. Mitsubishi Pencil rolled it out in Japan from March 18, 2024, in 0.5 mm with a 0.5 mm pencil and five body colors, at ¥1,430 (about US$9). Its SXR-L80-05 refills cost ¥132 (about US$0.80), and Mitsubishi Pencil says Lite touch refills also fit existing Jetstream bodies.

There is also a metal-bodied Jetstream 4&1 Metal, which The Pen Addict reviewed in April 2024.

How does the Jetstream 4&1 compare to a single Jetstream?

The 4&1 gives you four colors and a pencil; a single Jetstream is slimmer and shorter.

Where is the uni Jetstream 4&1 made?

The Journal Shop lists the Jetstream 4&1 as made in Japan. Its spec sheet gives Japan as the country of origin for the 0.5 mm model. Mitsubishi Pencil’s Japanese product page and press releases don’t state it.

How much does a Jetstream 4&1 cost?

It falls in our $$ band ($5–20 per pen) in the US. Mitsubishi Pencil’s reference price in Japan is ¥1,100 (about US$7) including tax; imported pens from US shops such as JetPens also fall in the $$ band.
