Quick answer

Elastic-band systems (TRAVELER'S notebook, Paper Republic Grand Voyageur, Louise Carmen Roadbook) hold bound refills; ring binders (Filofax, PLOTTER) hold loose punched pages. TRAVELER'S Regular refills are 210 × 110 mm, Filofax Personal pages 171 × 95 mm. PLOTTER's 11 mm rings are slimmest; Filofax's 23 mm rings hold most.

Notes on these facts
  • TRAVELER'S notebook, Regular Size starter kit: Made by Designphil Inc. (Tokyo). Made in Thailand (cover); Japan (refill): Traveler's Company says the leather cover is made in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and the notebook refill in Japan; its Japanese product page for the Brown Regular marks the cover MADE IN THAILAND. Retailer spec sheets (Pulp Addiction, Paper Whisper) give the same split. Source. Price: example listing. Released: Traveler's Company says the notebook launched in Japan in March 2006 with five refills, under the Midori brand.
  • Paper Republic Grand Voyageur XL: Made in Austria: Paper Republic's German product page says every cover is handmade (handgefertigt) in its Vienna workshop from vegetable-tanned Vachetta leather from a family-run tannery in Tuscany, Italy, and that its paper notebooks are printed in Vienna. Laywines also says made in Austria. A 2016 Drop listing said refills were then made in Budapest, Hungary, and the ribbon kit in Japan; the maker's current page supersedes that. We found no source for a Romanian origin. Source. Price: example listing.
  • PLOTTER Leather Binder, Bible size: Made by Designphil Inc. (Tokyo). Made in Japan: PLOTTER's Japanese site lists 原産国: Made in Japan for every Pueblo and Liscio binder size (read October 20, 2026); Dromgoole's and a Gadgeteer review agree. The leathers themselves are Italian: Pueblo is Italian steer leather, and Liscio is Minerva Liscio from the Badalassi Carlo tannery in Tuscany. Source. Price: example listing. Released: GetNavi's November 9, 2017 article says PLOTTER launched that autumn; we found no exact date.
  • Louise Carmen Roadbook M: Made in France: Louise Carmen's French product page says the Roadbook is 'confectionné en France' from full-grain leather vegetable-tanned in Italy, and calls it 'maroquinerie d'exception fabriquée en France'. Bonjour Paris places the leather workshop between Châteauroux and Chambord. Earlier brand pages said the elastic straps were made in Japan, but the current pages no longer say so. Bonjour Paris reports that the lined paper notebooks are made at a family-run workshop in Shanghai; we found no statement of where the other refills are made. Source. Price: example listing.
  • Filofax The Original Personal Leather Organiser: Made in United Kingdom: Filofax's UK, US and Canadian product pages all say The Original is made in the UK. Other Filofax organisers are made elsewhere: Milligram lists the Malden Compact Zip as made in China, and a UK retailer lists the faux-leather Moonlight Personal as made in China. Source. Price: example listing. Released: Filofax's blog says the first organiser in The Original collection came out in 2012, modelled on its first organisers.
  • Price bands are typical US retail, checked October 2026.

What are the main types of notebook systems?

There are two main types: covers that hold bound notebooks under elastic bands or ribbons, and ring binders that hold loose punched pages. Both let you keep one cover for years and replace only the paper.

How do the five systems compare?

The table sets out each system’s mechanism, main size, origin and price band. Figures come from each maker or from retailer spec sheets; see the individual guides for sources.

To-scale comparison of main insert sizes: TRAVELER'S Regular 210 × 110 mm, Paper Republic XL 200 × 135 mm, PLOTTER Bible 170 × 93 mm, Filofax Personal 171 × 95 mm, and Louise Carmen Roadbook M 210 × 130 mm

Which refills fit which covers?

Refills mostly stay within their own system, with two useful overlaps: Personal-format ring pages and small passport-type notebooks.

Insert Fits Doesn’t fit
TRAVELER’S Regular (210 × 110 mm) TRAVELER’S Regular Paper Republic XL (over its 200 mm height limit)
TRAVELER’S Passport (124 × 89 mm) TRAVELER’S Passport; within Paper Republic Pocket’s 140 × 100 mm limit Regular-height covers hold it loosely
Filofax Personal (171 × 95 mm, 6 holes) Filofax Personal and Compact; PLOTTER Bible (fewer sheets) PLOTTER Narrow
PLOTTER Bible (170 × 95 mm) PLOTTER Bible; other Personal-format binders PLOTTER Narrow and Mini

This table is our arithmetic from published sizes, not a fit test. Makers generally list only their own refills as compatible; Louise Carmen gives its Size M refill as 21 × 13 cm, and its Roadbook page also names Moleskine notebooks as compatible.

Which inserts can you buy for each system?

All five makers sell their own paper inserts; Traveler’s Company and Filofax give theirs item numbers, and we found none for the other three. Each guide lists the main inserts for its size in full.

System Maker’s paper inserts Item codes Other inserts
TRAVELER’S Regular Lined, grid, blank, dot, cream and watercolor notebooks; undated diaries 001–030, e.g. 026 dot grid Card file, three-fold file, pocket stickers
Paper Republic XL 48-page notebook refills in 5 rulings; 96-page book refills; planners None found Card & cash holder, ribbon sets
PLOTTER Bible 80-sheet memo pads (plain, ruled, grid, dot); 50-sheet to-do pad None found Lifters, ruler pad, pen holder, fastener case
Louise Carmen Roadbook M 64-page Size M refills: lined, dotted, white, ivory, to-do; all-black notebook None found Leather portfolio
Filofax Personal Ruled, plain and squared notepaper; dated diaries; to-do sheets e.g. 133008 ruled notepaper Dividers, zip envelope

Diaries differ most. TRAVELER’S sells undated ones, Filofax dated ones, and the 2027 PLOTTER diaries we found were A5 and Mini only, not Bible.

What are they made of?

All five flagship covers are leather, but the sources differ. Paper Republic, PLOTTER and Louise Carmen use Italian vegetable-tanned leathers, per the brands and retailers. Traveler’s Company says its cowhide covers are made in Chiang Mai, and Filofax calls The Original a leather organiser.

Refill paper varies too: TRAVELER’S notebook refills are MD Paper made in Japan, and Paper Republic’s German site says its paper is FSC-certified and its notebooks are printed in Vienna.

Which notebook system should you choose?

Choose by how you write: bound notebooks suit journaling, and rings suit planning.

  • TRAVELER’S notebook: the lowest-priced system here ($$$), with numbered refills in many rulings and published refill sizes.
  • Paper Republic Grand Voyageur: a wider page than TRAVELER’S (200 × 135 mm, just under A5) in a cover handmade in Vienna, at a somewhat higher price.
  • Louise Carmen Roadbook: a customisable luxury cover for several notebooks at once.
  • PLOTTER: a thin, light ring binder for only the pages you need now.
  • Filofax Original Personal: the largest rings here (23 mm), with dated diary refills sold separately.

Where is each system made?

Each flagship is made in a different country: Thailand and Japan for TRAVELER’S, Austria for Paper Republic (handmade in Vienna), Japan for PLOTTER, France for Louise Carmen and the UK for the Filofax Original. Materials often come from elsewhere: Paper Republic, PLOTTER and Louise Carmen use Italian leather, Bonjour Paris reports that Louise Carmen’s lined notebooks are made in Shanghai, and some other Filofax models are made in China. Each guide’s notes give the sources.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a TRAVELER'S notebook and a Filofax?

A TRAVELER'S notebook holds thin bound refills under an elastic band, so you add whole notebooks. A Filofax holds loose six-hole pages on rings, so you add, remove and rearrange single sheets.

Do TRAVELER'S notebook refills fit Paper Republic covers?

Not the Regular size: its 210 mm refills are taller than the 200 mm maximum retailers give for the Grand Voyageur XL. A 124 × 89 mm Passport refill is within the Pocket's 140 × 100 mm limit.

Do Filofax Personal refills fit a PLOTTER binder?

PLOTTER Bible binders take the same six-ring Personal-format page (Filofax 171 × 95 mm, PLOTTER 170 × 95 mm). PLOTTER's 11 mm rings hold about 80 sheets, so carry fewer pages than in a 23 mm Filofax.

Which notebook system is cheapest?

Of these five, the TRAVELER'S notebook is the only one in our $$$ band ($20–75 with a starter insert). The Paper Republic Grand Voyageur, PLOTTER, the Filofax Original and Louise Carmen are $$$$, over $75.

Which notebook system holds the most pages?

Among the five, the Filofax Original Personal has the largest rings, 23 mm. The Louise Carmen Roadbook M holds up to six 64-page Size M refills, or 384 pages, per the brand.

Which notebook systems are made in Japan?

PLOTTER binders are made in Japan, per PLOTTER's Japanese site. TRAVELER'S notebook refills are made in Japan, but the leather covers are made in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Is a ring binder or an elastic-band notebook better?

Choose rings if you want to reorder single pages, file old sheets and mix diary and notes. Choose elastic-band covers if you prefer writing in bound notebooks and archiving each one when full.
