- Made in Austria: Paper Republic's German product page says every cover is handmade (handgefertigt) in its Vienna workshop from vegetable-tanned Vachetta leather from a family-run tannery in Tuscany, Italy, and that its paper notebooks are printed in Vienna. Laywines also says made in Austria. A 2016 Drop listing said refills were then made in Budapest, Hungary, and the ribbon kit in Japan; the maker's current page supersedes that. We found no source for a Romanian origin. Source. Price: example listing.

What is the Paper Republic Grand Voyageur?
The Grand Voyageur is a refillable leather journal cover: thin notebooks slide under elastic bands inside it, and you replace them when they’re full. It’s the main product of Paper Republic, a small leather-goods maker in Vienna, Austria, which sells it in three sizes: Pocket, XL and A4.
The idea is close to the TRAVELER’S notebook: the leather cover stays, and the paper changes. Paper Republic’s German site says each cover comes with one blank 48-page notebook, and that the band color depends on the leather (orange on cognac, red on black, for example).

Sizes, contents, codes and euro prices come from Paper Republic’s German product page, checked October 20, 2026. Retailers round the XL to 14.5 × 21 cm (The Project Garments) or 15 × 21 cm (Laywines). Laywines also lists a Passport Grand Voyageur, which Paper Republic’s own shop doesn’t currently offer.
Which size should you choose?
Choose the XL for a desk journal or planner, and the Pocket for something that goes in a jacket.
- XL: a page of 13.5 × 20 cm gives room for daily journaling and sketches. It is the size most retailers stock.
- Pocket: 10.8 × 15 cm closed, for lists and travel notes.
- A4: 22 × 30.5 cm closed, for a desk-bound sketchbook or portfolio.
Which notebooks fit the Grand Voyageur?
Paper Republic gives a size limit you can check other notebooks against: “all notebooks up to” 14 × 20 cm for the XL and 10 × 14 cm for the Pocket. Laywines repeats the XL limit.
| Notebook | Size | XL (up to 20 × 14 cm) | Pocket (up to 14 × 10 cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| TRAVELER’S Regular refill | 21 × 11 cm | Too tall | No |
| TRAVELER’S Passport refill | 12.4 × 8.9 cm | Fits, small | Within limit |
| A5 notebook | 21 × 14.8 cm | Too tall and wide | No |
This table is our arithmetic from the published sizes, not a fit test. A bound A5 notebook such as the Leuchtturm1917 A5 is too big for the XL.
What are the refills like?
The included refill has 48 blank pages, and Paper Republic also sells dotted, squared, ruled and graph rulings in 2-packs. Laywines lists a 2-pack of XL dot refills, each with 48 pages.
Paper Republic’s German site says its writing paper comes from Austria, Germany and Sweden, is FSC-certified and acid-free, and that its paper notebooks are printed in Vienna with plant-based inks. A 2016 Drop listing said refills were then made in Budapest, Hungary; the maker’s current page supersedes it.
What inserts are available for the Grand Voyageur XL?
Paper Republic sells 48-page notebook refills in five rulings, thicker 96-page book refills, planners and a card & cash holder for the XL, and most also come in Pocket and A4 size. Its German shop gives item codes such as rxl01 (XL blank notebook 2-pack) and bxl01 (XL blank book refill).
| Insert | What it is | Maker or third-party |
|---|---|---|
| Notebook refills, set of 2 | 48 pages each of 80 g/m² FSC paper; blank, dotted, squared, lined or graph. XL 13.5 × 20 cm, Pocket 9.5 × 14 cm | Paper Republic |
| Book refill | 96 pages of 120 g/m² cream paper that opens flat | Paper Republic |
| Book refill, Dybdahl editions | Illustrated book refills, in Pocket and XL | Paper Republic with The Dybdahl Co. |
| Planner inserts | Dated weekly planner or undated “timeless” planner, also sold in planner bundles | Paper Republic |
| Card & Cash Holder | 2 card slots and 2 cash or ticket slots; Pocket, XL and A4 | Paper Republic |
| Band set (Gummiband-Set) | Extra elastic bands, sold for [xl] & [a5] or [pocket] & [a6] | Paper Republic |
Paper Republic’s English refill page says the 80 g/m² notebook paper comes from a Swedish mill, and the 120 g/m² book refill paper from an Austrian mill. By our arithmetic, the XL refill (13.5 × 20 cm) is smaller than A5 (14.8 × 21 cm), so check the size before ordering. Paper Republic says the card holder is made of “Natural” paper; Pen Heaven lists it as recycled kraft, 9.5 × 14 cm.
The refill pages on paper-republic.com sell each insert by size, so choose XL for this cover.
How much does the Grand Voyageur cost?
The XL falls in our $$$$ band (over $75 for a cover with its starter insert). Paper Republic’s own shop lists it at €70 (about US$78), and US listings at The Project Garments and Laywines are higher. The Pocket is €50 (about US$56); extra band sets and refills are sold separately.
How does it compare with other systems?
It sits between the TRAVELER’S notebook and the luxury covers: handmade in Europe like a Louise Carmen Roadbook, but priced closer to a TRAVELER’S notebook. Ring binders such as PLOTTER and Filofax take punched loose sheets instead of bound notebooks.
Our notebook systems comparison draws all five systems’ page sizes to scale.
Where is the Grand Voyageur made?
Paper Republic’s German site says every Grand Voyageur is handmade (“handgefertigt”) in its Vienna workshop, from Italian vegetable-tanned leather. Conda, an Austrian design site, says Jérôme Bacquias founded the company in Vienna in 2012. A Paper Republic job posting describes production, warehouse, office and shop together at its Vienna headquarters.
We searched for a Romanian origin and found no source for it. The maker says the Vachetta leather comes from a family-run tannery in Tuscany, is certified by the Pelle al Vegetale consortium, and is tanned without chrome.
Frequently asked questions
What size is the Paper Republic Grand Voyageur XL?
Paper Republic lists the closed XL cover at 14.8 × 21 cm (5.8 × 8.3 in); retailers round it to 14.5 × 21 or 15 × 21 cm. It takes notebooks up to 14 × 20 cm, and the included refill is 13.5 × 20 cm.
Does a TRAVELER'S notebook refill fit the Grand Voyageur?
Not the Regular size: a TRAVELER'S Regular refill is 210 mm tall, taller than the 200 mm maximum Paper Republic gives for the XL. A Passport refill (124 × 89 mm) is within the Pocket's stated 10 × 14 cm limit, which the maker says applies to any notebook.
How many notebooks does the Grand Voyageur hold?
The included elastic bands hold two refills. Paper Republic says that with two extra inner bands, sold separately as a band set, it holds up to four notebook refills, or two thicker book refills.
Is Paper Republic from Romania?
No source we found supports that. Paper Republic is an Austrian company: its own German site says the covers are handmade in its Vienna workshop, and Austrian press places its founding in Vienna in 2012.
What leather does Paper Republic use?
Paper Republic says it uses vegetable-tanned Vachetta leather from a family-run tannery in Tuscany, Italy, certified by the Pelle al Vegetale consortium and tanned without chrome.
How is the Grand Voyageur different from a TRAVELER'S notebook?
Both are leather covers that hold thin, swappable notebooks on elastic bands. The Grand Voyageur XL is a near-A5 shape (14.8 × 21 cm), much wider than a TRAVELER'S Regular, which takes 11 × 21 cm refills.
What paper is in Paper Republic refills?
Paper Republic says its paper is FSC-certified and acid-free, from Austria, Germany and Sweden; the 80 g/m² notebook refills use Swedish paper and the 120 g/m² book refills Austrian paper. The included refill is blank; other rulings come in 2-packs.
