What is the Hobonichi 5-Year Techo?

It’s Hobonichi’s five-year diary: one spread per calendar date, with five blocks on the left page, one for each year from 2027 to 2031. You write a few lines a day, and from the second year on you see what you wrote on the same date a year earlier.

Hobonichi first announced the 5-Year Techo on August 27, 2017, as a 2018–2022 book, with sales planned for December 2017. The current book runs January 1, 2027 to December 31, 2031.

Left, the left-hand A6 page of a Hobonichi 5-Year Techo date spread to scale, split into five year blocks from 2027 to 2031 on a 3.7 mm grid; right, the A6 cover at 113 × 153 mm and 330 g against the A5 at 156 × 214 mm and 670 g
The left page of each date holds five years; the facing page is free grid. The A5 is the same book on larger pages.

How does a 5-Year Techo spread work?

Each date gets a two-page spread: the left page has the date and five stacked blocks labelled 2027 to 2031, and the right page is free grid space. In 2027 you fill the top block; in 2028 you write in the second block and read the first.

Hobonichi says each day gets 178 grid squares in the A6, enough for a sentence or two. The free right-hand page takes longer notes, sketches or tickets, and a quote from Hobonichi’s archive runs along the foot of the spread.

Hobonichi’s guide adds five yearly calendars at the front and extra pages at the back, including a one-page-per-year review, Gifts, Addresses, My Lists and Personal Notes.

How big and heavy is the Hobonichi 5-Year Techo?

The A6 book is pocket-sized but thick: 153 × 113 mm and 25 mm deep, about 330 g. It’s 10 mm thicker than the A6 Hobonichi Techo Original, because it packs five years into 752 pages.

The A5 version doubles the writing area to 352 squares a day but weighs about 670 g. It’s a desk book, like the A5 Hobonichi Cousin.

What is the paper and binding like?

The pages are cream Tomoe River paper with the grid printed in light charcoal grey, and the book is thread-sewn so it opens flat at 180 degrees. That’s how Hobonichi’s Japanese page describes it, along with a brown PVC cover with gold foil and a dark brown ribbon bookmark.

Tomoe River is thin, so expect some show-through with dark or wet inks. Hobonichi includes a test-writing sheet so you can check your pens before writing in the book.

How does it compare to other five-year diaries?

It’s the only one of the three with dated years and Tomoe River paper; the others are undated and English.

Which cover and edition should you choose?

Pick the A6 if you carry it, the A5 if it lives on a desk; both come in a January start only. The book has its own brown cover, so a separate cover is optional.

Retailers say standard A6 Techo covers don’t fit the 25 mm book. Hobonichi sells covers made for the 5-Year Techo, such as an A6 leather cover, and gift sets that bundle a cover with the book.

Where is the Hobonichi 5-Year Techo made?

Hunter Paper Co. and The Journal Shop list it as made in Japan. Hobonichi is a Tokyo company; we didn’t find the country of manufacture on its own pages.
