What is the Moleskine Cahier Journal?

It’s Moleskine’s thin, soft-cover journal: 80 pages in a heavy card cover with a stitched spine, sold in sets of three. It’s the lighter, cheaper sibling of the hard-cover Moleskine Classic Notebook.

The Cahier is made for using up and filing: the last 16 pages tear out, and a pocket inside the back cover holds loose notes. Retailers list it in Pocket, Large and Extra Large sizes; this guide covers the Large.

What’s inside a Cahier Journal?

80 pages, of which the last 16 are perforated, plus a pocket inside the back cover.

To-scale drawing of a Moleskine Cahier Journal Large opened flat, each ruled page 130 × 210 mm, with a dashed perforation line near the fold, and notes: 80 pages per journal, 3 per set, last 16 pages perforated, back pocket, stitched spine
A Cahier Large opened flat at the same scale as its 130 × 210 mm pages.

Moleskine says the spine is sewn with a visible Singer stitch, so the thread shows on the outside, and the cover is card rather than board, so the journal flexes in a bag.

How does it compare to the Moleskine Classic Large?

Same footprint, a third of the pages, and no hard cover, elastic or ribbon.

Classic figures come from our Moleskine Classic Notebook guide. Three Cahiers hold the same 240 pages as one Classic, split into lighter books. For pairs with fully detachable pages, see the Moleskine Volant Journal.

How does it compare to Field Notes or a Midori MD?

It’s taller than a pocket notebook and slimmer than A5. At 130 mm wide, it is 18 mm narrower than an A5 Midori MD Notebook, which has 176 pages of cream MD Paper.

A Field Notes memo book is the pocket-sized take on the same idea: a kraft card cover, a stapled spine and a three-pack. The Cahier Large is the size for desk notes, meeting notes and class notes.

Which ruling should you choose?

Pick ruled for prose and class notes, squared for numbers and diagrams, and plain for sketching. All three come in the same 80-page, three-journal sets. For drawing in ink or heavy pencil, the Moleskine Art Sketchbook has 165 g/m² plain paper in the same 13 × 21 cm size.

Because each journal is thin, many people dedicate one to each project, class or month instead of keeping everything in a single book. The kraft cover takes a pen or a label, so you can title each one on the front.

If you want a single, sturdier book with more pages per volume, the hard-cover Classic is the better fit; if you want to hand pages over or file them, the Cahier’s perforated pages make that easier.

Is the Cahier good for fountain pens?

Moleskine lists the Cahier’s paper at 70 g/m², the same as the Classic, and we haven’t tested it ourselves. Reviewers often see 70 g/m² Moleskine paper feather and bleed with fountain pen ink.

If you write with a fountain pen, start with a fine nib and a dry ink, or look at our best notebooks for fountain pens.

Where is the Moleskine Cahier made?

Neither Moleskine’s Italian product page nor the retailer listings we found say. Moleskine is an Italian brand, based in Milan and owned by the D’Ieteren Group, and retailers list its Classic hard-cover notebooks as made in China.

The Cahier may well come from a different supplier, so check the band on your set if origin matters.
