What is the Passion Planner?

The Passion Planner is a weekly planner designed to turn long-term goals into scheduled tasks: you map your goals in the Passion Roadmap, then plan each week in half-hour blocks. It is sold dated and undated, in three sizes.

Angelia Trinidad designed it after graduating from UCLA with an art degree in 2012, and launched it on Kickstarter in October 2013. Passion Planner says that campaign raised US$48,000 from 2,000 backers in 30 days, and that the Passion Planner Compact raised US$650,000 a year later; Colorlines put the 2014 total at more than US$650,000.

Sizes, thickness, pages, paper and weights are from Passion Planner’s specs page; GTINs from its own store. All sizes share the same contents: the Passion Roadmap, an annual calendar, monthly layouts and reflections, weekly spreads, and 20 dotted and 20 blank pages. The product pages add a faux leather softcover, two ribbons, a fabric back pocket, a reinforced elastic band and a ruler on the last page.

Passion Planner’s sizing chart labels the three sizes A5, B5 and A4, and gives the Large as 8.27 × 11.69 in, the A4 size. That is about 6% bigger than the 7.8 × 11 in on its specs page and product pages, so we use the specs-page figure.

To-scale drawing of the three Passion Planner sizes: Large 198 × 279 mm (7.8 × 11 in), Medium 176 × 250 mm (6.9 × 9.8 in) and Small 148 × 210 mm (5.8 × 8.3 in), with 221 pages of 120 gsm paper

Which Passion Planner size should you buy?

Buy the Small to carry it every day, and the Large if it stays on a desk and you write large. The Small is A5, the size of most journals, while the Large is close to US letter width.

The Medium sits between them. Passion Planner’s sizing chart calls it B5; its specs page gives 6.9 × 9.8 in (176 × 250 mm), the B5 size, while some Amazon titles round it to 7 × 10 in.

What does the weekly layout look like?

Each week is a vertical two-page spread, with every day split into half-hour time blocks. Almost Practical’s review describes one column per day, running from 6:00 am to 10:30 pm with a line every half hour.

Beside the schedule are boxes for weekly focus and to-do lists, and blank space for notes. It suits people who time-block, like users of the KOKUYO Jibun Techo.

What is the Passion Roadmap?

The Passion Roadmap is a guided goal-mapping exercise at the front of the planner. You brainstorm goals over several time spans, choose the ones that matter, and break them into steps.

Each month closes with a reflection page, so you check progress against the Roadmap. This is the main difference from a plain dated diary such as the Hobonichi Techo.

How good is the paper?

Passion Planner lists 120 gsm paper, which reviewers describe as heavy for a planner. Ask a Planner Nerd contrasts it with the 52 gsm Tomoe River paper in the Hobonichi Techo.

Passion Planner says the pages are printed on sustainably sourced bamboo (grass) paper. We haven’t tested it with fountain pens or markers yet.

Dated or undated?

Choose dated to save set-up time, and undated if you might skip weeks. Passion Planner sells annual editions that start in January, academic editions that start in July, and undated editions with a Sunday or Monday start.

The Clever Fox Planner PRO is another undated goal planner, at 8.5 × 11 in. For a plain dated week with a ruled notes page and no goal pages, see the Moleskine 12-Month Weekly Planner. If you want a full page per day with an hourly schedule instead of a week, see the Day Designer 2027 Daily Planner.

Where is the Passion Planner made, and what does it cost?

Passion Planner’s own store data gives China as the country of origin for its paper planners, although the product pages don’t print a “made in” line. The brand is American, founded by Angelia Trinidad in California.

Passion Planner’s own store prices the 2027 weekly in our $$$ band ($20–75 per planner), with the Small cheapest and the Large dearest.
