What is the Midori Clip Ruler?
It’s a thin metal bookmark that clips onto a page and doubles as a 10 cm ruler and a drawing stencil. Midori’s Japanese store calls it a thin ruler with a template that clips onto planners and notebooks, and says the 0.3 mm sheet doesn’t get in the way when you turn pages or write.
Midori is a brand of Designphil Inc. in Tokyo, the maker of the MD Notebook and, through Traveler’s Company, the Traveler’s Notebook.

Every figure comes from Midori’s Japanese online store, which gives the same size, package and origin for all four versions. Midori doesn’t publish a weight.
How big is it, and which notebooks does it suit?
At 140.5 mm long, it’s just shorter than an A6 page, so it fits planners from A6 up. A Hobonichi Techo Original page is 148 mm tall, and a Traveler’s Notebook Regular refill is 210 mm.
Because the scale is only 10 cm, it’s for short lines, boxes and tables in a planner. An A5 page is 210 mm tall, so a full-height line needs a longer ruler, such as the Westcott 12 in acrylic ruler.
How do the slits and stencil work?
The two straight guide slits let you rule parallel lines at 5 mm or 7 mm spacing, and the etched shapes act as a small stencil. Midori says to use a pen with a tip of 0.5 mm or finer in the stencil, because a thick tip won’t trace the small openings cleanly.
A Sakura Pigma Micron 05, which draws a 0.45 mm line, is inside that limit.
Which version should you choose?
Choose by metal and stencil design; the functions are the same.
- Cat A (brass): cats in various poses, plus house and cup icons for plans, per Midori.
- Decorative pattern A (brass): frames, rosettes and dotted lines for decorating a journal.
- Copper A: 30 shapes, including basic shapes, travel and business icons, weather and a wavy line, per Midori.
- Silver A (stainless steel): the same icon stencil in silver; retailers sometimes call it Daily Life or Icon.
Midori’s English lineup uses the same four names.
How does it compare with other notebook add-ons?
It’s the flat, metal option: it marks your place and measures, while a pen loop carries a pen.
| Midori Clip Ruler | Leuchtturm1917 Pen Loop | |
|---|---|---|
| Job | Bookmark, ruler, stencil | Holds a pen on the cover |
| Size | 140.5 × 34 mm | 40 × 40 mm patch |
| Fixing | Clips onto a page; movable | Self-adhesive; permanent |
| Material | 0.3 mm brass, copper or steel | Elastic on an adhesive backing |
The two work together in one notebook: the Leuchtturm1917 Pen Loop on the back cover, the Clip Ruler on today’s page. Unlike the loop, the Clip Ruler moves from book to book.
How should you care for it?
Slide it onto the page edge rather than prying the clip open. Midori warns that opening the body out by hand may break it, and says to wipe it dry promptly if it gets wet. The brass and copper versions change in tone with age, and Midori notes slight color differences between pieces.
Midori also says to keep it away from children under six, because it has pointed parts. In September 2020 it posted a notice that some customers had taken a small dent at a seam from the manufacturing process for a scratch on the first Silver and Copper versions; it says it has since changed the design so the seam is less visible.
Where is the Midori Clip Ruler made?
Midori’s Japanese online store lists every current Clip Ruler as made in China. The Cat A, Decorative pattern A, Copper A and Silver A pages all give the country of origin as MADE IN CHINA. Some English-language shops say “Made in Japan”, but the maker’s own listing is the better source. Midori is a Tokyo-based Designphil brand.
