What is mt washi tape?
mt is the washi tape brand of Kamoi Kakoshi, a masking-tape maker in Kurashiki, Okayama. Washi tape is masking tape made from thin Japanese paper (washi), sold in solid colors and prints for decorating, labeling and holding paper in place.
Kamoi’s brand page tells the origin story: mt began with a small book made by three women who loved masking tape, who asked Kamoi for colorful tape. The company, founded in 1923, started out making flypaper before specializing in industrial and painting masking tape. mt started with 20 traditional Japanese colors and has since passed 1,000 designs, and it won a Good Design Award in 2008. St. Louis Art Supply dates mt’s creation to 2006; Kamoi’s page doesn’t give a launch year.

How much tape is on a roll?
Current mt basic single rolls hold 7 m (23 ft), but some sets and older rolls hold 10 m (32.8 ft). Maruzen Junkudo lists mt basic 1P solids at 15 mm × 7 m, and Jenni Bick, Tacto Studio and Paper Whisper list their 15 mm solids and prints at 7 m too. Hunter Paper Co. still lists a silver roll and a 10-roll set at 15 mm × 10 m.
At 148 mm, the long side of an A6 page, a 7 m roll gives about 47 full-width strips and a 10 m roll about 67. Compare price per meter, not per roll.
What can you use mt washi tape for?
Decorating planners and journals, labeling, and holding things down without damage to the paper.
- Planners: color-code weeks in a Hobonichi Techo or frame a page in a Traveler’s Notebook.
- Labels: write on a strip and stick it on a jar, cable or folder edge.
- Holding: tape a ticket or photo into a journal so it can come out again.
- Decoration: wrap gifts, edge cards and mark spines. Jenni Bick says it can go on painted walls without damaging the paint.
For ready-cut washi shapes instead of a roll, see Midori Yuru Log stickers.
Can you write on mt washi tape?
Retailers say yes: Jenni Bick, Tacto Studio and Hunter Paper Co. all call it easy to write on. We haven’t tested it yet, and shiny or metallic prints may need a permanent marker.
Try a corner first. A permanent marker such as a Sharpie Fine Point is the usual choice for labels on glossy designs.
For a clear tape that is made to be written on, see Scotch Magic Tape.
Does mt washi tape come off cleanly?
Kamoi says it does: mt doesn’t tear partway when you peel it, and leaves no adhesive behind. Retailers describe it as repositionable, which is the main difference from ordinary clear tape that tears paper when you lift it.
Hunter Paper Co. also calls its mt tape waterproof and heatproof. Kamoi doesn’t say so on the pages we read, so treat that as one shop’s claim.
What does mt washi feel like?
Thin, smooth and supple, as Kamoi describes it, and semi-transparent. Kamoi says it follows the shape it’s stuck to, and Jenni Bick notes that the translucency makes layered strips look good. That’s also why ruled lines can show through a light color, as in our drawing.
Patterned “deco” rolls such as Asanoha use the same 15 mm width as the solids, so they mix freely on one page.
Where is mt washi tape made?
In Japan. Kamoi Kakoshi’s company page describes its head-office factory in Kurashiki and a second factory in Yakage, both in Okayama, and says it ships mt from Japan to the world. Maruzen Junkudo’s listings give Japan as the country of origin, and US retailers say “made in Japan”.
In the US, mt is sold singly and in sets by stationery and art shops such as Jenni Bick, Hunter Paper Co. and St. Louis Art Supply.
