It’s a zip-around leather case that opens like a book, with ten elastic loops that hold pens side by side. Galen Leather, a family company in Istanbul founded in 2012, sells it through its US store, its Turkish store (as the “10’lu Deri Fermuarlı Kalem Çantası”) and US pen shops such as Goulet Pens. Galen’s US listing for the Black case dates from October 2017.

Goulet’s own description repeats Galen’s 160 × 125 × 30 mm, while its spec table gives 170 × 134.6 × 29 mm; the two may be measured differently, and we use Galen’s figure. Galen lists the Black case with GTIN 8682431661443.
Which pens fit?
Pens up to 145 mm long, according to Galen. That covers many standard capped fountain pens, such as the LAMY safari at 139.5 mm, the TWSBI ECO at 138.8 mm and the Pilot Metropolitan at 138 mm.
The Gadgeteer tested Galen’s 10 slot case with an A5 notebook holder, a related model, and found Tombow Dual Brush Pens too long for its loops, even though it describes that case as taking pens up to 6.5 in (165 mm). We haven’t tested the plain 10 slot case yet.
What is it made of?
Full-grain, vegetable-tanned cow leather outside, velvet inside, and a YKK zip, stitched by hand with waxed polyamide thread. Galen sells it in several leathers, including Black, Brown, Crazy Horse Forest Green and Undyed, and its Turkish store adds colours such as Mor (purple).
The Gadgeteer describes the Crazy Horse leather of the A5 notebook version as a matte finish that picks up marks and scratches quite easily. Vegetable-tanned leather usually darkens and develops a patina with use.
