TWSBI's own site says the brand was started by TaShin Precision, a Taiwanese maker with 50-plus years as an OEM manufacturer, but its product pages don't print a country of manufacture. JetPens says TWSBI's nibs themselves are made in Germany. TWSBI's Taiwanese site, twsbi.com.tw, didn't load for us on October 20, 2026. Source. Price: example listing.
  • TWSBI ECO Fountain Pen: Made by TaShin Precision (Taiwan). Made in Taiwan: Goldspot's ECO spec sheet says "Made in Taiwan", and Pen Chalet shows "ECO-T Taiwan" engraved on the ECO-T's cap band. Released: Pilot's Japanese press release for the 30th-anniversary model (November 18, 2022) says the Custom 74 went on sale in 1992; Goulet Pens gives the same year and ties the name to Pilot's 74th anniversary.
  • Platinum #3776 Century Fountain Pen (Chartres Blue, gold trim): Made by Platinum Pen Co., Ltd. (Tokyo). Made in Japan: Unsharpen's review says the band reads "Platinum #3776 Century Made in Japan". Platinum's own English pages don't state it in the sources we found. Source. Price: example listing. Released: Platinum's January 29, 2026 press release says the #3776 brand began in 1978 and the Century with Slip & Seal was born in 2011; we found no exact launch month.
  • Pelikan Classic M200 Fountain Pen (Black, gold-plated trim): Made by Pelikan (Germany). Source. Price: example listing. Released: Pilot's Japanese site says the Cocoon, the Metropolitan's Japanese sibling, went on sale in 2012; Wikipedia gives 2012 for the Metropolitan. We found no Pilot page dating the Metropolitan itself.

Can you get a gold nib for under US$100?

Rarely, in the US, in October 2026. The cheapest gold-nib pens in our guides, the Pilot Custom 74 and the Platinum #3776 Century, both sit in our $$$$ band, and the US listings we checked put the Custom 74 above US$100.

Japanese list prices have risen too. Pilot’s web catalog lists the black Custom 74 at ¥38,500 (about US$244) from July 1, 2026, and Platinum lists the gold-trim #3776 Century at ¥44,000 (about US$278).

If gold matters most, the #3776 Century’s Slip & Seal cap is the reason to pick it over the Custom 74: Platinum says it lets the pen sit unused for about 2 years. The Custom 74 holds more ink with its CON-70.

Piston filler or cartridges: which holds more ink?

A piston filler holds more: the Diamond 580 takes up to 1.98 ml, about five times a Pilot CON-40 converter. Cartridge pens are easier to keep inked on the move.

Pen Filling Ink capacity
TWSBI Diamond 580 Piston, bottle only 1.98 ml max (Goulet)
TWSBI ECO Piston, bottle only 1.76 ml max (Goulet)
Pelikan M200 Piston, bottle only About 1.2 ml (Pelikan’s Perch)
Pilot Custom 74 Cartridge or CON-70 1.03 ml cartridge, 1.23 ml CON-70 (Goulet)
LAMY AL-star T10 cartridge or Z28 1.56 ml cartridge, 1.08 ml Z28 (Goulet)
Pilot Prera Cartridge or CON-40 About 0.4 ml CON-40 (Unsharpen)

The TWSBI and Pelikan pens need a bottle every time. The Kaweco Sport takes only short international cartridges or a mini converter, so it holds the least.

What do other reviewers recommend?

US and UK reviewers land on the same short list.

  • The Gentleman Stationer’s 2026 list says the TWSBI 580 still rules its under-US$100 category, with the LAMY Studio second. It puts the Custom 74 in its over-US$100 gold-nib section and says gold nibs now usually cost more than that.
  • The Journal Shop’s guide to pens under £100 (about US$132) names the Custom 74 its best first gold nib, the #3776 Century as an alternative, the Kaweco AL Sport for pockets and the TWSBI 580AL for piston filling. Its prices are in pounds for UK buyers.

We couldn’t find a current Wirecutter or Pen Addict list for this budget.

Where are these fountain pens made?

Japan, Germany and Taiwan. The Pilot and Platinum pens are made in Japan; Pelikan, LAMY and Kaweco state German manufacture themselves; and retailers list Taiwan for both TWSBI pens, whose nibs JetPens says are made in Germany.

Each guide’s facts box explains its source, including where a maker’s own page names no country.

Frequently asked questions

Is the TWSBI Diamond 580 worth it over the TWSBI ECO?

If you want the larger tank and screw-out nib units, yes. Goulet Pens lists the 580 at 1.98 ml against 1.76 ml for the ECO, and TWSBI sells 580 nib units in five widths; the ECO is lighter at 21 g and costs less.

What is the cheapest gold-nib fountain pen?

Among the pens we cover, the Pilot Custom 74 and Platinum #3776 Century, both with 14k nibs and both in our $$$$ band (over $75). US listings we checked in October 2026 put the Custom 74 above US$100, so a gold nib usually stretches this budget.

Which fountain pen under $100 holds the most ink?

The TWSBI Diamond 580, with a maximum of 1.98 ml by Goulet Pens' figure. Its piston fills from a bottle only, as do the TWSBI ECO (1.76 ml) and Pelikan M200 (about 1.2 ml).

What is a good everyday fountain pen for work?

The LAMY AL-star suits daily carry: an anodized aluminium body, a polished steel nib in EF, F, M, B or a left-hand LH grind, and LAMY T10 cartridges that are easy to find. LAMY's German shop lists it at €29.50 (about US$33).

What is the best pocket fountain pen?

The Kaweco Classic Sport. Kaweco's German site describes it as 10.5 cm (4.1 in) closed and 13 cm (5.1 in) with the cap posted, so it writes like a full-size pen; the clip is sold separately.

What is a demonstrator fountain pen?

A pen with a clear body, so you can see the ink and the filling parts. The Pilot Prera and TWSBI Diamond 580 come in clear versions; the TWSBI ECO has a clear barrel with a solid-color cap.

Is the Pelikan M200 worth stretching the budget for?

If you want a German piston filler, it is the smallest step into Pelikan: 12.5 cm capped and 13.5 g per Pelikan, with a gold-plated steel nib whose unit unscrews. It sits in our $$$$ band, over $75.
