Pentel’s Japanese site lists the five model numbers, HB lead preloaded in each, a low center of gravity toward the point, a stepped tip for a clear view of the line, a matte black tip and a metal-and-rubber grip, and the list price above (October 2026). It gives no length or weight, so those and the materials come from Bungu Store’s listing of the 2025 anniversary edition (PG1005-ANA: 10 × 8 × 145 mm, 11 g, recycled ABS barrel, aluminum and silicone-rubber grip, iron clip, brass tip) and from Hunter Paper Co. (14.7 cm). Mechanical Inclination notes the plastic body, full brass clutch and metal lead tube.
Why does a drafting pencil have a 4 mm sleeve?
A long, thin sleeve lets the point reach the paper along the edge of a ruler or template. With a short cone, the body would hit the straightedge and push the line away from it.
The sleeve also makes the point easy to see while you draw. Pentel’s 2025 anniversary release lists the 4 mm guide pipe, the stepped head, a short clip that stays clear of the hand and the lead-grade window as the hallmarks of its drafting pencils.
Because it doesn’t retract, the sleeve is also the part most likely to bend if the pencil is dropped on its point. A pencil case with a separate slot is worth the space.
Which lead size should you choose?
Choose 0.5 mm (PG1005) for everyday writing and drafting; it is the most widely stocked.
- 0.3 mm (PG1003): fine technical lines and small handwriting; thin lead breaks more easily.
- 0.4 mm (PG1004): a step between fine and standard, listed by JetPens and Japanese retailers.
- 0.5 mm (PG1005): the all-round size.
- 0.7 mm (PG1007): bolder and stronger, for heavy hands and sketching.
- 0.9 mm (PG1009): listed on Pentel’s Japanese site; we didn’t find it at US retailers, so expect to import it.
The 0.3 mm PG1003 listing showed 4.5 stars from about 5,561 reviews in an Amazon mirror, and the PG1005 ranked around 175th in Mechanical Pencils.
How does it compare to the GraphGear 1000?
The Graph 1000 for Pro is the lighter, simpler pencil; the GraphGear 1000 is heavier, metal and has a retractable tip.

| Released | 1986 | 2002 |

GraphGear specs come from our guide to it. In reviews mirrored from Amazon, one buyer calls it “lighter than the GraphGear 1000, which I personally prefer”; another found it too plastic next to the GraphGear.
Is the Graph 1000 for Pro good for writing?
Yes, especially if you find metal drafting pencils heavy. At about 11 g it weighs about the same as a Pentel Sharp P205, and the padded grip is softer than knurled metal.
The fixed sleeve is the drawback for carrying. Keep it in a case, or choose a pencil with a retracting tip. If you want a heavier all-metal drafting pencil, see the rOtring 600; for a grippier Pentel with rubber blocks on a metal grip, see the Pentel Smash.
What lead does it use?
Any standard lead of the right diameter; it comes loaded with HB. Set the grade indicator to match the lead you put in, so you know what’s inside without writing a test line. For a stronger refill, see our guide to Pentel Ain Stein lead.
Where is the Pentel Graph 1000 for Pro made?
Hunter Paper Co. lists both the 0.5 and 0.7 mm versions as made in Japan. Pentel’s Japanese product page doesn’t state the country of manufacture in what we found. Pentel, now ASTRUM Corporation, is based in Tokyo.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the Pentel Graph 1000 for Pro and the GraphGear 1000?
The Graph 1000 for Pro is a lighter, mostly plastic pencil with a fixed 4 mm sleeve, about 11 g. The GraphGear 1000 has a metal body, a knurled grip and a sleeve that retracts, at about 20 g.
When did the Pentel Graph 1000 come out?
In 1986, per Pentel's Japanese design archive. Pentel picked it, with the GraphGear 500 (2001) and GraphGear 1000 (2002), for its 2025 limited editions marking 60 years of drafting pencils.
What lead sizes does the Graph 1000 for Pro come in?
0.3 mm (PG1003), 0.4 mm (PG1004), 0.5 mm (PG1005) and 0.7 mm (PG1007) at US retailers; Pentel's Japanese site also lists 0.9 mm (PG1009). The last digit of the model number is the lead size.

How heavy is the Graph 1000 for Pro?

Is the Graph 1000 for Pro good for writing as well as drafting?
Yes. At about 11 g with a padded grip it is light for a drafting pencil, and some reviewers prefer it to the heavier GraphGear 1000 for that reason.
Where is the Pentel Graph 1000 for Pro made?
Hunter Paper Co. lists it as made in Japan. Pentel's own pages don't state the country; the brand is based in Tokyo.
