What is the Pentel GraphGear 1000?
The GraphGear 1000 is a Pentel drafting pencil: a metal-bodied mechanical pencil with a lead sleeve that retracts into the body. ASTRUM Corporation of Tokyo, called Pentel Co., Ltd. until April 1, 2026, makes it, and Pentel of America sells it as a “mechanical drafting pencil”.
Most drafting pencils have a fixed metal sleeve that can poke through a pocket or bend in a bag. The GraphGear 1000’s sleeve pulls back, so it works as a drafting tool at a desk and as an everyday pencil you carry.
Why is the GraphGear 1000 so often recommended?
Because it combines a drafting-grade tip, a metal grip and a retractable sleeve at a price far below premium pencils. Everyman’s 2026 roundup of 9 models called it the best mechanical pencil for most people, and ShopSavvy’s 2024 list also put it first.
The Pen Addict calls the GraphGear a “beloved drafting and engineering pencil”, in the same breath as the rOtring 600. A reviewer at Mechanical Inclination calls it one of their all-time favorite mechanical pencils.

Model numbers, colors, the 4 mm tip and origin come from Pentel of America’s product guide; the 0.4 mm model, JAN codes and price from Pentel’s Japanese site. Length and weight come from Unsharpen and Bungu Store, since Pentel doesn’t publish them.
How does the retractable tip work?
Press the end knock and the tip comes out; open the clip and it slides back into the body, Pentel’s Japanese site explains. Pentel’s design archive adds that while the tip is out, the end of the clip tucks into the body so it doesn’t press on your hand. Pentel of America calls the system a “dual-action retractor”.
A 4 mm sleeve is the drafting length: it lets the point reach paper along the edge of a ruler or template without the cone getting in the way. With the sleeve retracted, the pencil is safer in a shirt pocket.
Which lead size should you choose?
Pick 0.5 mm (PG1015) for everyday writing; it is the most widely stocked size.
- 0.3 mm (PG1013): the finest line, for small handwriting and fine technical work. Thin lead snaps more easily.
- 0.5 mm (PG1015): the all-round size for notes and drafting.
- 0.7 mm (PG1017): a bolder, stronger lead that breaks less under heavy pressure.
- 0.9 mm (PG1019): the thickest and sturdiest, good for sketching and for people who press hard.
Pentel’s Japanese site also lists a 0.4 mm PG1014. Pentel of America doesn’t sell it, so expect to import it. For a lighter plastic drafting pencil with a fixed 4 mm sleeve, see the Graph 1000 for Pro.
How does the GraphGear 1000 compare to the Kuru Toga?
The GraphGear is a heavier metal drafting pencil; the Uni Kuru Toga is a light plastic pencil that rotates its lead to keep the point even.
| Pentel GraphGear 1000 | Uni Kuru Toga Standard | |
|---|---|---|
| Body | Metal, knurled grip | Plastic |
| Lead sizes | 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9 mm | 0.3, 0.5 mm |
| Sleeve | 4 mm, retractable | 2.9 mm, fixed |
| Length | About 149 mm | 142 mm |
| Weight | About 20 g | About 10 g |
| Japanese maker price | ¥1,650 (about US$10) | ¥495 (about US$3.10) |
Choose the GraphGear for drafting, heft and a pocket-safe tip. Choose the Kuru Toga if you write with light strokes and want a sharp point without turning the pencil.
For all eight pencils we compared side by side, see our best mechanical pencils roundup.
What lead and refills does the GraphGear 1000 use?
It comes loaded with HB lead (Super Hi-Polymer, per Pentel of America), and any standard lead of the right diameter fits. Pentel’s Japanese site says the hardness window shows HB, H, B or 2B, and the eraser refill is Z2-1N.
If you’re moving from a wood pencil such as the Ticonderoga No. 2, a B or 2B lead gives a darker line than HB. For a budget mechanical pencil to compare, see the BIC Xtra-Smooth.
How much does the GraphGear 1000 cost?
In Japan, Pentel sets a maker price of ¥1,650 (about US$10) including tax for the PG1015; in the US it usually sells in our $$ band ($5–20 a pencil). Most US listings we checked fall in that band, though Staples lists it above $20. Pentel of America’s list price is above $20, but most shops discount it. A black 60th-anniversary edition (PG1015-ANA), marking 60 years of Pentel drafting pencils, went on sale in Japan on October 24, 2025 at ¥2,200 (about US$14) including tax.
Where is the Pentel GraphGear 1000 made?
In Japan: Pentel of America’s 2023–2024 product guide and 2022 catalog both give the GraphGear 1000’s origin as Japan. PartsSource’s spec sheet for the PG1015A agrees. Pentel’s Japanese product page doesn’t state a country.
Frequently asked questions
Does the GraphGear 1000 tip retract?
Yes. Pentel's Japanese site explains that pressing the end knock pushes the tip out and opening the clip pulls it back into the body; Pentel of America calls this a dual-action retractor that protects the lead.
What lead sizes does the Pentel GraphGear 1000 come in?
Pentel's US store lists 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9 mm, sold as PG1013, PG1015, PG1017 and PG1019. Pentel's Japanese site also lists a 0.4 mm PG1014, which isn't sold by Pentel of America.
How heavy is the GraphGear 1000?
The review site Unsharpen gives 20.1 g, and Bungu Store lists the 2025 anniversary 0.5 mm edition at 20 g. Pentel doesn't publish a weight in the sources we found.
Is the GraphGear 1000 good for writing or only for drafting?
Pentel markets it as a drafting pencil, but several 2024–2026 roundups pick it as their best everyday mechanical pencil too. The retractable sleeve makes it easier to carry than most drafting pencils with a fixed tip.
What is the difference between the GraphGear 1000 and the GraphGear 500?
The 1000 has a metal grip with rubber pads and a retractable tip; the 500 is a simpler, cheaper drafting pencil with a fixed sleeve. Architecture Lab puts the 1000 at roughly double the 500's price.
What lead does the GraphGear 1000 use?
It ships with Pentel Super Hi-Polymer HB lead, and any standard lead of the same diameter fits. A hardness indicator on the pencil lets you mark which grade is loaded.
Where is the Pentel GraphGear 1000 made?
In Japan. Pentel of America's product guide gives the origin as Japan, and PartsSource's spec sheet agrees.
