What is the Pilot Dr. Grip mechanical pencil?
The Dr. Grip is Pilot’s ergonomic mechanical pencil: a thick barrel with a soft, double-layer grip and a lead that advances when you shake it. Pilot Corporation of Tokyo makes it, and Pilot Corporation of America sells the line in the US.
Japanese press coverage says Pilot launched Dr. Grip in 1991 as a ¥500 (about US$3.20) ballpoint, with a barrel diameter worked out with input from doctors.
The mechanical pencil followed in 1992 with the shaker mechanism Pilot calls “Fure Fure”. In October 2021 Pilot marked 30 years of the line with a limited run of 30 colors based on the first model.
THE Dr. GRIP, the current top model, went on sale in Japan on December 16, 2022.
How does the shake-to-advance mechanism work?
A metal weight sits loose around the lead tube; each shake slides it into the lead advancer, which feeds out a little lead. Wikipedia notes that pencils built this way are often called “shaker pencils”. The top button still works as a normal click.
On THE Dr. GRIP a Fure Fure Lock stops lead from creeping out in a bag or pocket. Pilot’s Japanese catalog says you turn the grip section to switch the lock on or off, and the click still works while it’s locked.
Yoseka Stationery’s instructions add that the shaker is on when the lock mark no longer lines up with the notch on the grip.

How thick is the Dr. Grip?
At 14.6 mm across, THE Dr. GRIP is about 4 mm thicker than a typical slim mechanical pencil. That width is the point: a fatter barrel lets your fingers relax instead of pinching.
Yoseka Stationery describes the grip as two layers: a firm outer layer over a softer inner one.
Retailers add that Dr. Grip pencils are weighted toward the tip, and Paper Whisper lists brass in the grip of THE Dr. GRIP, which Pilot’s own material list (silicone rubber grip, resin barrel) doesn’t mention.
Is the Dr. Grip good for arthritis or hand pain?
Pilot’s US site says Dr. Grip is certified for Ease-of-Use by the Arthritis Foundation. It credits the balanced design and a cushioned grip that eases writing fatigue, and Yoseka Stationery says the original Dr. Grip pencil received the foundation’s Commendation for Ease-of-Use.
We haven’t tested it with arthritic hands, so treat comfort as the maker’s claim.

In Pilot's Japanese catalog THE Dr. GRIP comes in 0.5 mm (HTDG-90R) and 0.3 mm (HTDG13), and the G-Spec in 0.3, 0.5 and 0.9 mm. Wikipedia says the US Center of Gravity pencil has been sold in 0.7 mm only.
