What is the Pentel Sharp P205?
The Pentel Sharp P205 is a 0.5 mm mechanical drafting pencil with a 4 mm fixed lead sleeve, a clip and an eraser. It is the 0.5 mm member of Pentel’s P200 series, which STL Art Supply dates to 1970. Pentel’s Japanese company history goes back further for the name: the first “ぺんてるシャープ” (Pentel Sharp) pencils, in 0.5 and 0.7 mm, launched in 1960 alongside Hi-Polymer lead.
Pentel, the Tokyo-based maker, sells the same design in several lead sizes and codes each one by barrel color. Collectors say the design has hardly changed since the 1970s, and STL Art Supply calls the series one of the world’s best-selling mechanical pencils, a claim we can’t check.

What do the barrel colors mean?
Each P200 model’s barrel color tells you its lead size: black for 0.5 mm, blue for 0.7 mm and yellow for 0.9 mm. Pentel of America sells them as P205A (black), P207C (blue) and P209G (yellow), with burgundy red (P205B) and green (P205D) as extra 0.5 mm colors. A blog that recalls the original lineup adds a brown P203 for 0.3 mm.
Grade labels vary a little by shop: some list the preloaded HB lead as #2 and others as #2.5. Pentel also sells P205 3-packs in assorted barrel colors (P205MBP3M), so color isn’t a size code in every pack.
Which lead size should you choose?
Choose the 0.5 mm P205 for writing and fine technical lines, the 0.7 mm P207 if you press hard, and the 0.9 mm P209 for bold sketching.
- P205 (0.5 mm): the standard choice for notes, math and drafting.
- P207 (0.7 mm): a wider line from a thicker lead; the same size as the BIC Xtra-Smooth.
- P209 (0.9 mm): the thickest lead, for loose sketching and heavy-handed writers.
How does the P205 compare to other mechanical pencils?
The P205 is the light, plain drafting pencil; the GraphGear 1000 is Pentel’s heavier, retractable upgrade, and the Kuru Toga rotates its lead.
| Pentel P205 | Pentel GraphGear 1000 | uni Kuru Toga Standard | rOtring 600 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lead sizes | 0.5 (0.7, 0.9 as P207/P209) | 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9 | 0.3, 0.5 | 0.5, 0.7 |
| Sleeve | 4 mm, fixed | 4 mm, retracts | 2.9 mm, fixed | Fixed |
| Length | 14.5 cm | ≈149 mm | 142 mm | ≈142 mm |
| Weight | 10 g | ≈20 g | ≈10 g | ≈22 g |
| Made in | Japan | Japan | Japan | Japan |
Specs for the other three come from our guides to each, which cite their own retailer sources. The rOtring 600 is the all-metal alternative with a fixed sleeve: at about 22 g, retailers list it at more than twice the P205’s weight in almost the same length. For fine 0.2 or 0.3 mm lead that won’t snap, Pentel’s Orenz hides the lead in a sliding sleeve instead.
What lead and eraser does the P205 take?
The P205 comes loaded with 0.5 mm Pentel Super Hi-Polymer HB lead, and both the lead and the eraser can be refilled. Pentel of America lists the preloaded lead and the Z2-1N refill eraser.
Any 0.5 mm lead fits, so you can switch to a softer grade for sketching or a harder one for crisp drafting lines. Shops label the preloaded HB as #2 or #2.5, which describes the same lead.
OnTimeSupplies lists a lifetime limited warranty. Together with the replaceable lead and eraser, that makes the P205 a pencil you can keep using for years.
For a pocket pencil with a cap from the same era, see the Pentel Sharp Kerry, released in 1971.
Where is the Pentel P205 made?
In Japan: Pentel of America’s 2022 catalog gives Japan as the origin of the Sharp P205, P207 and P209. STL Art Supply, Azor and Monk Office also say Japan. Pentel, founded in 1946 and named Pentel in 1971 according to JetPens, is based in Tokyo.
