Quick answer

The Uni Kuru Toga is a Mitsubishi Pencil mechanical pencil, launched in Japan in March 2008, that turns its lead each time you lift the tip. The original engine turns it about 9 degrees per stroke, a full turn every 40 strokes, so the point wears to a cone, not a flat wedge. Retailers list it as made in Japan.

Key takeaways

  • Rotation: about 9° per stroke on the original engine, so 40 strokes make one full turn; the 2017 Advance doubles that to about 18°, or 20 strokes per turn.
  • Launched in March 2008; Mitsubishi Pencil said in 2023 that the series had sold more than 100 million pencils and led Japanese mechanical pencil sales for 14 straight years.
  • Mitsubishi Pencil lists the plastic Standard (M5-450, M3-450) at ¥495 (about US$3.10) and the 2023 KS 'new Standard' at ¥605 (about US$3.80), both in 0.3 and 0.5 mm.
  • Unsharpen lists the plastic Standard at 142 mm (5.6 in) long, 10.6 mm across and 10 g.
  • The top model, the KURUTOGA DIVE, adds automatic lead feed with 5 settings and lists at ¥5,500 (about US$35) in Japan.

What is the Uni Kuru Toga?

The Kuru Toga is a mechanical pencil that turns its own lead as you write, so the point stays sharp instead of wearing flat on one side. Mitsubishi Pencil sells it under the uni brand and launched it in Japan in March 2008. The name plays on the Japanese for “turns and stays sharp”.

Mitsubishi Pencil says the “Kuru Toga Engine” fixes uneven wear (偏減り), where an ordinary lead slowly wears to a slanted edge. The maker blames that slant for lines that thicken, lead that snaps and graphite that smudges the page. In its February 2023 press release, it said the series had passed 100 million pencils sold and had been Japan’s top-selling mechanical pencil by sales value for 14 straight years (2009 to 2022, major-retailer POS data).

Inside, Mitsubishi Pencil says, the engine is three gears: the middle one, linked to the lead, moves up and down with writing pressure and meshes at an angle with the others, so it turns a little with every stroke.

How does the Kuru Toga rotate the lead?

Every time you press the tip down and lift it, a small gear turns the lead about 9 degrees, so it makes one full turn every 40 strokes. That is the figure reported when the pencil launched, and the reason the tip wears to a cone. The Advance model doubles the angle to about 18 degrees, or about 20 strokes per turn.

Kuru Toga rotation dials: the standard engine turns the lead about 9 degrees per stroke, 40 strokes per full turn, and the Advance about 18 degrees, 20 strokes per turn
One tick per stroke. The standard engine needs 40 strokes for a full turn; the Advance needs 20.

The rotation is driven by the lead moving in and out slightly under pressure. Retailer guides note that a very light touch may not move it enough to turn. The engine has been revised over time: Mitsubishi Pencil’s February 20, 2023 “new Standard model”, sold as the KS model (M5-KS, M3-KS), has an improved engine that it says reduces tip wobble, moved toward the middle of the barrel to make room for a grip.

Which Kuru Toga model should you choose?

For most people the plastic Standard is the right start: it has the rotating lead at the lowest price. The other models change the body, the speed of rotation or the lead feed.

Model What’s different Lead sizes we found Japanese list price
Standard (M5-450) Plastic body, the original design 0.3, 0.5 mm ¥495 (about US$3.10)
KS, the 2023 “new Standard” (M5-KS) Revised engine with less tip wobble, added grip 0.3, 0.5 mm ¥605 (about US$3.80)
Roulette (M5-1017) Knurled metal grip; 148 mm, 14 g per Cult Pens 0.5 mm ¥1,100 (about US$7)
Advance (2017) Double-speed rotation; the Advance Upgrade adds metal front parts for a lower center of gravity 0.5 mm Not found
Metal (April 22, 2024; M5-KH) Metal barrel 0.5 mm at launch; 0.3 mm now listed too ¥2,750 (about US$17)
Wood (March 21, 2025) Natural-wood grip, aluminum rear barrel 0.5 mm ¥3,850 (about US$24)
DIVE (M5-5000) Automatic lead feed, 5 settings 0.5 mm ¥5,500 (about US$35)
  • Standard: the cheapest way to try the mechanism. Pick 0.3 mm for small handwriting, or the KS if you want a grip.
  • Roulette: The Pen Addict calls its knurled metal grip “fantastic” and compares it to much more expensive pencils.
  • Advance: for people who want the point to stay round with fewer strokes.
  • DIVE: the top model. It feeds lead automatically, so you rarely click, and it costs about 11 times the Standard in Japan.

Prices are Mitsubishi Pencil’s Japanese reference prices including tax; Japanese colors and models aren’t all sold in the US.

What lead should you use in a Kuru Toga?

Any standard lead in the right diameter fits; Uni’s own US starter set comes with its Nano Dia lead. Retailer listings describe Nano Dia as lead with nanodiamond particles. Mitsubishi Pencil doesn’t require a special lead, so the choice of grade (HB, B, 2B) is about how dark and soft you like the line.

If you’re coming from wood pencils such as the Ticonderoga No. 2 or the Blackwing 602, a B or 2B lead in a 0.5 mm Kuru Toga gives a darker line than HB.

How does the Kuru Toga compare to other mechanical pencils?

Its point stays rounder than a normal mechanical pencil’s, but only while you keep lifting the tip between strokes. Because the turn happens when the tip lifts, long continuous strokes such as shading don’t rotate the lead. For a pencil that also fits a busy desk, pair it with a stand-up case like the KOKUYO Neo Critz. Our best mechanical pencils roundup compares it with seven other picks.

If a slim barrel tires your hand, the 14.6 mm Pilot Dr. Grip is the cushioned alternative.

Where is the Kuru Toga made?

Retailer spec sheets list the Standard Kuru Toga as made in Japan. The Journal Shop gives Japan as the country of origin for the Standard 0.5 mm, and Bungu Store lists it as made in Japan. Mitsubishi Pencil, which also makes the uni-ball ZENTO Signature, doesn’t state the country on its Japanese product pages, so check the packaging if it matters to you.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Kuru Toga rotate the lead?

Each time you press the tip to the paper and lift it, a small spring-loaded gear inside the pencil turns the lead a fraction of a turn. On the original engine that fraction is about 9 degrees, so the lead completes a full turn after about 40 strokes.

What lead sizes does the Kuru Toga come in?

The plastic Standard and the KS model are sold in 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm. The Roulette, Wood and DIVE are listed in 0.5 mm only, so 0.5 mm is the size with the most choice.

Which Kuru Toga model should I buy?

Start with the plastic Standard if you just want the rotating lead at the lowest price. Choose the Roulette for a knurled metal grip, the Advance for faster rotation, and the DIVE only if you want automatic lead feed and don't mind paying several times more.

Where is the Kuru Toga made?

Retailer spec sheets list the Standard Kuru Toga as made in Japan; Mitsubishi Pencil's own pages don't say. Mitsubishi Pencil, which sells it under the uni brand, is based in Tokyo.

Does the Kuru Toga work with light pressure?

Not always. The rotation is triggered when the lead is pushed in slightly and released, so a very light touch may not turn it. Normal handwriting pressure is what the mechanism is designed for.

What is the difference between the Kuru Toga and the Kuru Toga Advance?

The Advance, introduced in 2017, doubles the rotation angle per stroke, so the lead turns about twice as fast. Its Advance Upgrade version adds metal front parts for a lower center of gravity.

What lead should I use in a Kuru Toga?

Any standard lead of the right diameter fits. Uni's US starter set pairs the pencil with its Nano Dia lead, which is the pairing the maker itself sells.

How much does a Kuru Toga cost?

In Japan, Mitsubishi Pencil lists the plastic Standard at ¥495 (about US$3.10) and the KS model at ¥605 (about US$3.80) including tax. US prices vary by retailer and pack, and they usually fall in our $$ band ($5–20 a pencil).
